The Difference Between a Celebrity and a Popular person
08:53:00Opeyemi FamakinFirst! Who is a celebrity?
Personally, I consider a celebrity to be someone who is widely
celebrated and recognized for remarkable actions or work leading him/her
to be famous.
On that note, I can list examples such as Chimamanda Adiche,
Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Dapo Oyebanjo aka D’banj,
Innocent Idibia aka 2face, Paul and Peter Okoye aka Psquare and others
in that light who are highly and widely celebrated for their brilliant
works in the course of their chosen career.
Now let’s shed more light on “ the Nigerian celebs Popular people”.
These are the people who some of us call celebrities but are actually
just popular for being popular until they find a reason to be likened
to a celebrity. Sort of like the Kim Kardashians of the Nigerian
entertainment industry.
Some of these people have no distinct career path and litter
themselves across all corners of the Nigerian entertainment industry
playing the role of “jack of all trades” until they eventually find the
most talentless role they can stick with.
These people enter the industry with the insight to rape every iota
of proficiency in the entertainment industry to get fame and money. You
see them jump from being terrible video vixens, models, bleached and
prouds, celeb bffs to lousy red carpet presenters, radio presenters,
bloggers, columnists, and before you know it they start featuring in
movies, dropping awful music and even gather the guts to champion
conferences claiming expertise in these fields.
Since the emergence of these special people in the entertainment
industry, the term “Media Personality” has been adulterated. Most of
them hide under the umbrella of being a media personality. This is not
to say we don’t have credible professional media people in Nigeria but
these our “Nigerian celebs Popular people” have succeeded in stealing the term from the real professionals.
And to the major people who suffer from these “Nigerian celebs
Popular people”… the audience, all I can say is “heavy sigh” because
they are the same people who are fueling this trend with their support. I
know there are still some of us who have refused to condone this trend.
But then again… who are we kidding? Celeb, Popular or Media
personality or whatever term they coin for themselves they are still
making their money. We can only sit relax and find a comic relief or
beef (lol) in their chosen act of entertainment mockery.
THIS IS MY 2NAIRA… Feel free to drop yours.
Disclaimer: I am not a Celeb or a
Celeb popular person. Just like you I am just a simple Nigerian
