So I saw this Nigerian Movie titled ‘Inale’, normally I’m
not a fan of Nigerian movies. Once a while I do watch some high budget films
and if I may say Nigerian directors are trying. The truth is most high budget
films are packed with popular actors with good diction and an awesome poise
setting with little flaws in their acting but I still feel the story line is
crap. Of course compared to the normal Nigerian movie it’s awesome but in the
real sense I still feel it’s crap, you don’t gain anything. Basically the high
budget movies of nowadays are just trying to sell to the world that Nigeria isn’t
as razz and bush as the media paint it to be, then also the high budget movies try
to make a statement that they can do better in the quality of their movies
compared to the random Nigerian movies and yes we agree, but I still stand on
it that their story lines are shitty. Ok maybe less shitty but shitty all the
same.
Then yesterday something magical happened, I saw a Nigerian
movie. Inale, what attracted me to the movie was the fact that it was directed
by one of the Amata brothers ‘Jeta Amata’ and everyone knows that those guys
are the best directors in Nigeria (YES I said it). When I saw that it was an
Amata movie I had fanny flutters (I’m straight) and already I had a biased mindset
that the movie was gona be epic and boy was I correct.
So the setting was in a village in the east, not the typical
igbo setting, I think it was in cross rivers and the tribe is one of those
random tribes that exist in Nigeria. It started off with a white girl going to
her white grandpa (who I’m guessing is an anthropologist) saying she’s scared
of the monsters under her bed thus making her not sleep. Then she picks up an African
carving on the table and asks her grandpa where he got it from and he tells her
he got it from a village in Nigeria, he mentioned the carving was of a princess
named Inale and he tells her the story of Inale. Will I tell you the story? Hell
no, go watch the film and find out for yourself.
Talking about the movie, I was surprised that it was a
musical. For those of you that have seen ‘Les Miserables’ and enjoyed it then I
can bet you’ll also enjoy this movie cuz it’s also a musical. I can’t believe
they actually pulled off a musical movie in Nigeria and they didn’t look stupid
doing it. Then again it’s an Amata movie so what else were you expecting. This
movies’ storyline is AWESOME, To me this is the first high budget Nigerian
movie with a decent storyline that isn’t shitty. I couldn’t find a single fault
with the story line, the setting was superb, the casting and the diction was
also nice… But the musical scenes were, well it wasn’t all that African. They
sang some songs in the native language and those songs were enchanting but the
songs they sang in English had no iota of Africa in it, the last song sung had
a western cowboy beat to it and I was like TF and I remember one line to one of
the songs where the king mentioned something about road traffic, I was wondering
where road traffic came in a village setting where the year was probably 1850
something.
All in all this movie is an awesome movie and I recommend you
watch it. This movie is for people who enjoy, appreciate and understand
classical movies. Like I said earlier on if you’ve seen Les Miserables and you
enjoyed it then I can assure you that you’ll also enjoy this movie. If you fall
into the category of Nigerian’s who watch random Nigerian movies just for the
sex and killing and utter stupidity then I don’t think this movie is for you
cuz you’ll probably say it’s boring. Over ten I’ll give this movie an 8. For
the fact that they made it a musical and they could pull it off without looking
stupid and awkward they deserve an 8.
