Word on the street is that the Prime Minister of the U.K. is putting pressure on the Nigerian government to ban the anti-gay law. I have mixed feelings about this though. The first feeling is ‘Who the hell is the U.K. to pressurize Nigeria and tell us what to do?’, the second is ‘Well, the anti-gay is actually barbaric and is pointless’ so I understand why they are pressuring us to remove the ban.
Let’s flashback a bit to the anti-gay law. A few years ago (2014 to be precise), for no apparent reason, Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan signed a same-sex prohibition bill and put a ban to same-sex marriage making it punishable with 14 years in prison. 4 years later, only one case of gay arrest has been reported and it involved a group of gay guys gang raping a guy. Apart from that, nothing has happened and we all know Nigeria is filled with a lot of gay men and women.
In my own opinion though, I’m neither for or against the gay law. I just believe it’s one of the most pointless laws Nigeria has ever shat out of it arsenal of pointless laws because nothing prompted the law. It just sprung out of the blues and as usual, it’s not being enforced. Nigerians are scared that if the gay law is banned, HIV is likely to increase (which is a bit true) and a new form of rape (gay rape) might emerge. They also say that immorality would spike up and other new problems would arise.
All that being said, do you think the anti-gay law should be lifted in Nigeria?
