Chronicles of an Abuja JJC: My First "Almost" Job

11:41:00Opeyemi Famakin

I'm a born and bred Lagos Boy (also a retired Yoruba demon) who use to think everything in Nigeria revolved around Lagos, up until I did my NYSC in Kaduna and the scales fell off my eyes, instantly I fell in Love with the north. I decided to do the stupidest/smartest thing and I relocated to Abuja and here's my story.

I always knew that life after NYSC wouldnt be so rosey. I knew that i'd have to job hunt and grovel to employers, i knew i'd have to roam the streets of abuja in search of that dream/manageable job. After sight seeing Abuja and learning it's do's and dont's i decide
to job hunt. Being a self proclaimed amateur Chef the first places i decided to apply for jobs were 4 star restaurants and hotels, i went there and met their chefs and told them about my dream of being a chef and my willingness to work under them (for free if possible), i even went as far as submitting CV's to be a chef intern  but they gave me the famous "We'll get back to you reply".

After being rejected by chefs to work for free(imagine) i decided to apply for jobs in my caders which happens to be Mass Communication. I sent mails to various media houses and only one of them replied and they said "i'm impressed, your Cv is very nice and you're very experienced, are you in abuja lets meet", i replied and sent  numerous mails but till date no meeting. I got a few emails to come for some job interviews in lagos saying i've been shortlisted for blablabla but i'm sticking to my gamble which is to stay in Abuja no matter what. I cant deal with that Lagos traffic.

So after applying to a few places and not getting a reply i just went on "Fuck it" mode and i resorted to being a couch potatoe. The beautiful thing about abuja is that the light is constant so staying at home and watching cable tv and surfing the net was fun. After a week of being jobless my dad says to me 'I didn't raise a couch potatoe"(well he didnt use those exact words) and he says iron your clothes,  next week you'll resume work in my office as my PA. I was skeptical but when he mentioned there was unlimited wifi and free food and transport i couldnt refuse.

So basically my first job in Abuja is being a PA to my dad, currently i'm learning some extra I.T skills (i hear those people are rich) and i'm still applying for other jobs. Always knew life wouldnt be a bed of Roses after NYSC. I sha know this wont last for long so for the meantime, i'm chilling.

also, why does everyone in Abuja always stay indoors.I stay in an estate with a fuckload of houses and i can bet my life that at least 15 parolable babes of my age will live there but i've never seen any. Every night i take long strolls and jogs hoping to see the abuja babes everyone keeps talking about but NO, everyone is indoors, Nawa o.

  1. Guess you stay at lifecamp/gwarinpa axis or prince and princess/lokogoma axis, reason you don't see dem abj babes. Abuja is different from lag, babes dey hustle well too, high hustle nt hood hustle. Applying for jobs in abuja, you need to do everyday follow up and have an insider even if na cleaner position u dey apply for. Hustle is real 4 dt town. Read your post on shopping, got a good laff, my dear you were given d jjc treatment. Everything is cheaper in abuja than Lagos believe me excluding accommodation sha, you only need to shine your eyes. As for transportation you can take 'along' and do some trekking unless you are ajebutter or you stay in all those rich people area where na so so cab, heeheee. But even with that, na bargaining na, the cab drivers will bill you based on the area you are coming from and where you are going (how 'big mannish' they percieve the places to be) not necessarily the distance, heeheeehee. Sorry for the epistle

Tip for staying in abj: always give the impression you know what you are doing/going/saying

  4. I have lived in Abuja for more than a decade, still my friends and I find it difficult to meet people cos everyone like you said are always indoors. If you can make just one friend in that city, you will be good..
